AJP NSW June Newsletter 2026

Dear Supporters,

So much has happened this month, and it all comes down to one thing, our voice for animals. With the NSW election getting closer, our voice in parliament needs to stay strong. Animals are so often left out of the decisions that affect them, ignored, unconsidered, and given no voice in outcomes that decide their entire lives. Keeping our MP Emma Hurst in parliament means animals always have someone fighting for them, backed by our kind community.

Earlier this week, over 170 members and supporters came together with Emma Hurst MP for Pies and Politics, talking honestly about what's happening for animals in our community and giving Emma the chance to hear directly from the people she represents.

We are also excited to share that Emma has a big update below, covering advocacy and parliamentary work she's been leading for animals and people.

Speakers and tickets are officially here for our 2026 Animal Justice Party National Conference! The first round of speakers has just been announced, and early bird tickets are officially on sale below, so if Sydney this October is calling you, get in quick!

A few new animal actions are happening this month as well. Submissions are open for the Inquiry into Dingoes in National Parks in NSW. Our petition to End Primate Experimentation in NSW, sparked by Emma's exposé on A Current Affair, needs your voice. And our push to Make Terrigal Haven a Marine Sanctuary is calling for signatures too.

Everything below is a chance to lend your voice, support, and take action, and together, that's how we stay loud and create a better world for animals, people, and the planet.

Major Expose on Secret Baboon Experimentation Facility:
We worked with A Current Affair to expose what is happening behind-closed doors at a taxpayer-funded animal research facility in Western Sydney, where baboons have their bodies rented out for experimentation. If you missed the story, you can watch it HERE. Our campaign is ongoing to stop taxpayer funding towards these cruel experiments - sign our petition HERE.

Fixing Broken Animal Cruelty Laws: The NSW Labor Government made an election commitment to overhaul animal protection laws. It was supposed to be a historic reform – however, the Bill introduced to Parliament falls well-short of the election commitment, and continues to allow for major systemic animal cruelty, including for farmed animals. My team and I are fighting to pass amendments to improve this Bill.

Fighting to Stop Inhumane Brumby Killing: We have been campaigning to stop the aerial shooting of brumbies in Kosciuszko National Park. I have called on the NSW Government to run fertility control trials using the latest one-dart technology used in the United States. Despite repeatedly agreeing, no trial has ever started, and the aerial shooting continues. We will continue to fight to stop this bloodbath.

Running an Inquiry into Dingo Management: We have established a Parliamentary Inquiry into Dingoes in National Parks, which I will Chair on the Animal Welfare Committee. Dingoes are the only native animal exempt from protection under the Biodiversity Conservation Act. They are shot, poisoned, and baited, despite their cultural significance to many traditional custodians and their sentience. This inquiry is your chance to make your voice heard – you can make a submission HERE.

Exposing the Greyhound Racing Industry: We have continued our work to expose systemic issues in the greyhound racing industry, both in the media and in Parliament. Key developments include:

  • Exposing that the greyhound racing industry was given almost 9 times what the land was worth for the purchase of Appin Greyhound Track, giving the industry an extra $20 million in taxpayer dollars. Watch the story HERE.

  • Sent the Greyhound Racing Regulator to an inquiry to investigate if they are acting in contempt of the NSW Parliament, as they have refused to produce documents concerning sexual harassment allegations and other inappropriate behaviour within the industry. This just raises more questions - who are they providing cover for and why? Watch this space...

Secured a Commitment to Establish Caitlin’s Law: Together with Caitlin’s mother Kylie, we have secured a commitment from the NSW Government to establish ‘Caitlin’s Law’. Right now, our laws allow perpetrators of domestic and family violence to automatically become the senior next of kin if their partner dies without a will. In Caitlin's case, her former partner was able to take control of her body, keeping her family from holding a funeral – despite her partner facing assault allegations against Caitlin at the time of her death. I have worked closely with Caitlin's mother Kylie Bailey, and we are thrilled that the NSW Government has committed to closing this loophole.

Pies and Politics with Emma Hurst MP

What an incredible day it was on Sunday, 21st June, celebrating with over 170 AJP members and supporters, filling Glebe Town Hall for our Pies & Politics event with our MP Emma Hurst!

Emma shared powerful reflections on what we've achieved together for animals and people, the campaigns still ahead of us, and how every one of us can help inspire change, spread kindness, and build a better world for all.

After her talk, Emma had a chat with everyone, catching up with familiar faces and meeting plenty of new ones, while everyone else enjoyed their pies (a huge thank you to Funky Pies for keeping everyone fuelled!).

Attendees told us afterwards that there was an amazing sense of joy and community in the room, with people of all ages there because they care about making NSW a better place for animals and people.

Thank you to everyone who came along. We can't wait to keep working alongside you, stronger than ever, through our regional groups, working groups, volunteering, taking action, or coming together as a community.

We know many of you want to do more for animals, and one of the most powerful things you can do is become a member.

When we're organised and growing, the major parties take notice; they can't ignore a movement this determined. But it's not just about the numbers. Joining connects you to your local regional group, campaign opportunities, volunteer actions, and first access to our events, all of it comes your way.

End Primate Experimentation in NSW

Emma Hurst MP worked with A Current Affair to expose a secret Western Sydney facility where baboons are bred and rented out for experimentation. Documents Emma obtained reveal 24 baboons died there between 2021 and 2025, for reasons including a skin rash and bloating. Humane, human-relevant alternatives already exist, yet there's still no commitment from the NSW Government to end this practice.

Sign the petition to demand the NSW Government stop funding primate research and invest in humane alternatives instead.

Make Terrigal Haven a Marine Sanctuary

🌊🦈 On June 8th, World Oceans Day, we launched a new petition calling for urgent protection for Terrigal Haven, home to critically endangered Grey Nurse Sharks, Green Turtles, and other vulnerable marine life.

There is currently no protected sanctuary zone here, and animals are being injured and killed as a result:

  • A Grey Nurse Shark was found dead with a hook in its mouth in March 2026
  • Terry the Green Turtle lost a flipper to fishing line entanglement

Only around 1,420 adult Grey Nurse Sharks remain on Australia's east coast, and Terrigal Haven sits in a protection gap, with no declared sanctuary between Little Broughton Island and Malabar's Magic Point.

Sign now to demand an urgent marine sanctuary zone at Terrigal Haven.

National Animal Rights Day

This year marked the 16th National Animal Rights Day, and once again, AJP NSW members and supporters came together with other animal advocacy organisations to call for compassion and protection for all non-human animals.

Our regional groups showed up, right alongside fellow advocates from across the movement. And honestly, that's what it's all about, when we join forces with other organisations, we make so much more noise for animals together.

Thank you to everyone who came along to be their voice.

The Biggest BBQ Lesson

We helped break a record! AJP NSW members and supporters from Newcastle, Hunter and the Central Coast joined a historic Guinness World Record attempt for the largest barbecue cooking lesson at Zestiny Farm on the Central Coast. Exactly 359 people turned out, and together we broke the previous record!

It was such a fun event to be part of, with plant-based burgers cooked using electric vehicle power, live music, and so many passionate locals to chat with along the way. The event also raised money for OzHarvest, and in true sustainability spirit, Cercle Cups provided reusable cups and trays, while our AJP members pitched in, collecting plastic cups and compostables for reuse too.

A day full of good food, good company, and good vibes, thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a success!
