Emma Hurst is the first female Animal Justice Party MP elected to NSW Parliament, and has driven significant progress for animal protection in NSW. A former psychologist with a background in campaigning, political lobbying and media work.
Since her election in 2019, Emma has passed more private members' bills than any other sitting MP. Over the last six years, she has secured over $100 million in government funding for animal protection, mandated the "right to release" for animals used in experimentation, banned forced swim tests and forced smoke inhalation experiments (a world first), outlawed convenience killing in council pounds, and increased penalties for animal cruelty eightfold.
In 2023, Emma established the Animal Welfare Committee, the first standing parliamentary committee on animal welfare anywhere in Australia. She has run numerous parliamentary inquiries into key animal issues, including battery hens, live export, greyhound racing and the enforcement of animal cruelty laws.
Emma continues to lead the Animal Justice Party's ongoing campaigns to end greyhound racing, protect kangaroos, remove shark nets from NSW beaches and free hens from cages. She is also a strong advocate for women's health, chairing the world-first Inquiry into Birth Trauma.
