Ban Deadly 1080 Poison

1080 is a highly toxic poison used in NSW to kill animals labelled as pests. It is indiscriminate, has no antidote, and causes a slow and painful death. Animals killed by 1080 include foxes and wild dogs, as well as native wildlife, companion animals, and threatened species.

1080 baiting occurs on public and private land, including national parks and areas used by communities and pet owners. The poison can also cause secondary deaths when poisoned animals are eaten by other wildlife.

Despite growing public concern and evidence that humane alternatives exist, 1080 continues to be used across NSW.

Ban Deadly 1080 Poison Working Group

Group Status: Currently inactive

What this working group focuses on

The Ban Deadly 1080 Poison working group exists to support the removal of 1080 poison and the transition to humane, non-lethal alternatives. When active, the group focuses on:
• supporting legislative reform and policy change
• supporting our MP Emma Hurst’s work in Parliament
• empowering local campaigns through councils and communities
• promoting humane wildlife and animal management alternatives
• public education and outreach

Much of this work has historically been led through strong local and regional group action.

How to get involved

This working group is not currently running as a coordinated statewide campaign. However, local Animal Justice Party regional groups continue to campaign on 1080 in several areas.

If you would like to start a working group OR connect with a local campaign to support existing work, email [email protected] and include:
• Ban Deadly 1080 Poison
• your name and email address

We can help link you with active local groups, provide resources, and support community-led efforts to move away from the use of 1080 poison.

Campaign achievements and highlights

• More than 1,000 people signed the Ban Killer 1080 Poison petition calling on the NSW Environment Minister to ban its use.
• In 2022, Animal Justice Party Councillor Matt Stellino successfully led a motion to ban 1080 poison in the City of Campbelltown.
• Local Animal Justice Party groups supported council motions calling for humane alternatives, including successful motions in the Northern Beaches and Byron Shire.
• Byron Shire Council passed a motion to protect dingoes and advocate for humane alternatives, supported by Emma Hurst MP and local councillors.
• Volunteers across NSW conducted outreach, collected hundreds of signatures, and raised awareness about the risks of 1080 to wildlife, companion animals, and communities.
• AJP regional groups supported the development and use of a 1080 Local Campaign Toolkit, enabling community-led action at the council level.

These outcomes demonstrate that local action can and does lead to meaningful change.
