We Need an Independent Office of Animal Protection

Animal protection is failing - but the solution is simple. We need an Independent Office of Animal Protection that can oversee animal cruelty laws and their enforcement.

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) suffers from a hopeless conflict of interest. They are responsible for regulating animal use industries, including the animal agribusiness industry - who abuse and slaughter millions of animals every year - yet they also have control over policies, procedures, standards and guidelines on animal welfare.

It is a hopeless conflict of interest – and sadly, it is the animals who lose out.

With the industrialisation of animal agribusiness increasing, this conflict of interest only gets worse by the day. The interests of powerful agricultural lobbying groups urgently need to be removed from the development of animal protection laws.

Establishing an Independent Office of Animal Protection would eliminate this conflict of interest and allow for the development of animal policies, procedures, standards and guidelines through an independent and robust process that will ensure all animals are afforded the protections they deserve. The Independent Office must be properly funded, and entirely independent of animal-use industries and the DPI, to be effective.

We must act to secure an IOAP - because animals deserve a professional, empowered, resourced and independent agency to take on the role of animal protection.

That's why we're calling on the NSW Government to ensure animals are properly protected under law, by establishing and funding an Independent Office of Animal Protection.
