Please join the Animal Justice Party Central Coast and Marine Wildlife Rescue Central Coast for a rally against deadly Shark Nets. We will congregate on the grassed area at Shelly beach and send our current and future government the strong message that we want the Shark Nets out of our waters.. now!
In the last seven years, at least 588 marine inhabitants were caught in nets on the Central Coast, 418 of which died. This included 330 threatened species, 10 dolphins, and 18 turtles. Shelly beach is of the 14 netted beaches on the Central Coast. Shelly beach is also the beach where an endangered loggerhead turtle recently chose to lay her eggs. Fortunately, her hatchings will be small enough to fit through the netting on their way out to sea this year, but if another turtle chooses to return next year to nest, she might not be so lucky.
Shark nets are outdated and ineffective, and devastating to marine life. Non-deadly smart shark mitigation technologies are now available and need to be implemented.
Guest speakers include AJP candidate for The Entrance, and Cathy Gilmore of Marine Wildlife Rescue Central Coast, plus more to be announced.
