Ban 1080 in North Sydney
Tell North Sydney Council to Stop Using 1080 Poison
1080 poison is so dangerous it's banned almost everywhere in the world. North Sydney Council, however, is still using it in three public reserves as part of a fox management program.
Other areas like Campbelltown and the Blue Mountains have already stopped using 1080 due to concerns about animal cruelty and environmental damage. We need to let North Sydney Council know that the community doesn’t want this poison in our community.
Where is 1080 used in North Sydney?
North Sydney Council uses 1080 poison in three public parks:
- Balls Head Reserve
- Berry Island Reserve
- Badangi Reserve
These parks are popular with families, children and dogs. The Council warns that 1080 poison is deadly to dogs and cats, and there is no antidote. To try and keep pets safe, they ban dogs from the parks for around 6 weeks during each baiting period (twice a year, in April/May and October/November).
That means for 3 months a year, pet owners can’t safely use these public spaces.
North Sydney Council’s signage at these sites shows that Council knows the devastating risks of this poison, stating: “1080 poisoned baits are lethal to dogs & cats and there is no antidote available”.
Risks of 1080
- 1080 is a deadly poison that affects animals when they eat, breathe, or touch it.
- It is listed as a Schedule S7 (Dangerous Poison) in Australia and a Class 1a pesticide2 (Extremely Hazardous) by the World Health Organisation.
- It is toxic to all warm-blooded animals, including pets like dogs and cats, as well as rare marsupials like quolls, bilbies, koalas, wombats, and wallabies, along with ground-dwelling birds, snakes and reptiles.
- Poisoned animals suffer a prolonged and agonising death, to which there is no antidote.
- 1080 kills indiscriminately – putting beloved companion animals and native wildlife at risk.
This petition of concerned residents asks North Sydney Council & Councillors to please end the use of 1080 poison (Sodium Fluoroacetate) and Strychnine poison on all Council-owned and/or managed lands.
No animal deserves 1080. Residents are concerned about the cruelty of this poison, the dangers to native and domestic animals, and the loss of access to parks for residents during baiting periods.
