In 2023, Gus the Blue Groper, a beloved fish, was tragically speared in an illegal attack. Gus trusted humans and swam freely in his ocean home, but a cruel act ended his life. This crime outraged our community and people from all over Sydney, Australia and the world demanded justice.

Our collective voice helped secure Blue Gropers full protection under the law, with stronger penalties for those who break the law. But this ban is not permanent yet.

In February 2024, the NSW Government introduced a 12-month trial ban on catching Blue Gropers, but the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party are attempting to weaken this protection. We need to make sure that fish are protected for good and that the government knows that the community demands permanent and stronger protections.

If we don’t act now, the government could reverse these protections and Blue Gropers could be at risk once again.

We can’t allow the government to roll back protections for Gropers. This petition is calling for permanent protections and stronger penalties for anyone who harms these fish. We need your voice to show that the community stands with us and wants to protect Gropers forever.
