Animal Justice Party Wrapped up 2024

Read our Dec newsletter covering the months of October, November and 2024 overall!

Thank you for standing with us, raising your voice and fighting for animals.

Change is possible when we stand united. This year, together, we’ve achieved incredible wins.

2024 has been a big year for standing up for animals and none of it would have been possible without you. Your dedication to protecting animals and fighting for their rights inspires everything we do.

As we look back on this year’s incredible achievements and challenges, we’re reminded of the power of compassion and determination. From advocating for stronger laws to protect animals, to launching campaigns that raised awareness and drove change, to securing wins in Parliament - every effort has made an impact.

With our MP Emma Hurst advocating for change in Parliament and our communities rallying with strength across NSW, we have shown that real progress comes from dedicated leadership and passionate voices standing up for those who cannot.

But our work is far from over. Hens are still confined to cruel cages. Greyhounds and horses continue to suffer in the racing industry. Dingoes, brumbies and other wild animals are vilified and slaughtered under cruel and senseless government policies. Our beloved wildlife faces extinction from habitat destruction and our planet remains at risk - along with every being who calls it home.

This is why we fight. And this is why we need you by our side. Together, we can demand a future where compassion replaces cruelty, where animals are free from suffering and where our communities speak louder and fight harder for a kinder world for all beings.

As we celebrate the victories of 2024, we are ready to fight even harder in 2025. With your support, there is no limit to what we can achieve!

Join today and be part of the change for all animals!

Emma Hurst in NSW Parliament

Banned Puppy Farms in NSW!

We did it. For the dogs! Thanks to Emma’s incredible work and nearly 50,000 of you who raised your voices, the NSW bill has become law.

Now, intensive factory dog farms - that force hundreds of dogs to pump out litter after litter until the day they die - will no longer be legal in NSW. Breeders will face caps on dog numbers, litter limits (including limits on the number of c-sections a dog can be forced to endure), staffing ratios and mandatory registration and advertising requirements. While the Bill introduced by the NSW Government wasn’t as strong as ours, these measures are just the beginning.

Emma will keep fighting for even stronger protections for dogs - including cracking down on backyard breeding - and with your support, we will secure them.

More incredible wins we achieved together this year:

Banned forced swim and smoking experiments

Thanks to Emma's relentless efforts and the unwavering support of our movement, forced swim and smoking experiments are now banned - making NSW the first place in the world to outlaw these cruel tests. Animals will no longer be near-drowned or suffocated in the name of flawed science.

Achieved a complete ban on fishing blue gropers.

The tragic killing of Gus, a beloved blue groper, sparked outrage and inspired action. With over 5,800 signatures gathered through community support and the dedication of our regional groups working on the ground, we turned this tragedy into change, now gropers have full protection in NSW.

Bring Back the Ban on Greyhound Racing

Together, we exposed the damning report of the former Chief Vet of Greyhound Racing NSW, leading to massive media attention, the resignation of the CEO, multiple inquiries, a major protest in Sydney and the introduction of the AJP’s Bill to ‘Bring Back the Ban.’

  • Secured Government backing for the country's first Independent Office of Animal Protection.
  • Secured the government’s first-ever $25,000 funding for farmed animal sanctuaries, helping places like Little Oak Sanctuary.

  • Saw the roll out of a $7 million funding package secured by the AJP, including $4.5 to develop alternatives to animal experimentation and $2.5 million for rehoming animals used in experimentation.

  • Expanded court powers to impose animal bans for animal cruelty convictions and boosting transparency of enforcement agencies.

  • Chaired an Inquiry into the broken NSW pound system, which made strong recommendations including funding for mass-desexing programs, legalising TNR and increasing funding for rescues.

  • Held inquiries into critical animal issues, including the aerial shooting of brumbies, enforcement of animal cruelty laws and the horse racing industry.

  • Introduced a Bill to reform bestiality laws and launched a national campaign to strengthen animal sexual abuse laws.

  • Secured recognition of animals in the NSW Government’s Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill.

  • Introduced an anti- ‘Ag-Gag’ bill to ensure media are not ‘gagged’ in reporting on undercover footage that shows what happens to animals behind closed doors.

  • Ran an Inquiry into the vet shortage, which recommended funding for wildlife hospitals, affordable vet care (aka ‘Veticare’), animal-friendly public transport and more.

  • Chaired a world-first Inquiry into Birth Trauma (described as the ‘me-too’ movement for birthing parents), with all major recommendations supported by the Government.

  • Advocated for wildlife road safety, prompting a government symposium on ‘Using technology to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions’.

This year’s wins prove it: Political representation for animals works. When we unite - members, advocates and leaders - we are unstoppable. With your strength, Emma’s voice in Parliament and our communities fighting shoulder to shoulder, we will build a better future.

Live Sheep Export Banned!

Ending this needless cruelty has been a hard-fought battle, made possible by the determination of advocates, animal protection organisations and individuals. Every action taken, no matter how small, has brought us closer to ending the suffering of sheep in live export.

To our AJP supporters - thank you for the role you played. Whether you emailed MPs, attended protests, signed petitions, joined submission writing workshops, or raised your voice against this cruelty, your actions have made a real difference.

While we celebrate the milestone of banning live sheep exports, we know the battle isn’t over. The end date remains too far away and parties like the Shooters are pushing to reverse the ban.

We want to reassure you that we will not back down. We will continue fighting to protect this ban and ensure all live animal exports are history for good.

Global Wins for Kangaroos!

The world is standing up for kangaroos and together, we’re delivering powerful blows to the industries profiting from their suffering.

The commercial kangaroo industry has already taken multiple hits as Nike, Puma, and New Balance cut ties with kangaroo leather. After our efforts in exposing the cruelty of the commercial kangaroo trade, Sokito followed suit, ceasing the use of kangaroo leather in their products. This shift to fully vegan football boots is a direct response to our calls for compassion. As Sokito boldly stated: 'Alternative materials can perform just as well as animal leather.'

Just recently, kangaroos gained another massive victory. Decathlon, the world’s largest sporting goods retailer, announced it will eliminate kangaroo leather from its products. With over 2,000 stores across 79 countries, this decision is set to have a significant impact on the commercial kangaroo industry.

Over in the United States, Senators Tammy Duckworth and Cory Booker introduced the Kangaroo Protection Act of 2024, which would ban kangaroo leather imports. Last year, our NSW MP Emma Hurst and our Victorian MP Georgie Purcell travelled to Washington, D.C., to expose the horrors of the kangaroo slaughter to Congress. Their response: cruelty has no place in the modern world. The Bill is gaining momentum and we’re pushing hard for its success.

Europe is stepping up too! The Dutch Parliament, led by our sister party, the Dutch Party for the Animals, passed a motion to ban kangaroo imports and is now advocating for an EU-wide ban.

Global Day of Protest Against Adidas 🌏✊

Adidas, the world is watching.

In our Global Protest Against Adidas, we united with kangaroo and wildlife advocates worldwide to demand that Adidas stop killing kangaroos for soccer boots and end its role in this barbaric trade.

In Australia, passionate supporters rallied outside Adidas stores in Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, and Adelaide, while online actions took place in Western Australia and Tasmania. Across the globe, advocates spoke up for kangaroos in Germany, Washington, New York, Canada, Taipei and Japan.

While the world embraces sustainable, cruelty-free alternatives, Adidas remains stubbornly behind the curve, continuing to support an industry that brutally kills kangaroos for profit.

The pressure is mounting and we will keep fighting until Adidas cuts ties with this cruel trade once and for all.

Bring Back the Ban

On Saturday 17th of August we gathered as a collective, with one goal to:

BRING BACK THE BAN!

Ellie Robertson, our amazing MC for the protest said: “Your presence is a powerful statement against the exploitation of greyhounds and a call for a kinder, more compassionate world. We must keep the pressure on the government and expose the corruption and suffering that continue to plague this industry."

Our MP Emma Hurst has recently introduced a crucial Bill to outlaw greyhound racing, responding to explosive reports of severe animal cruelty within the industry which were brought to light by her office. At every opportunity she is highlighting the cruelties of greyhound racing in Parliament and pushing for an end to this barbaric industry.

"The greyhound industry had its chance to clean up its act and failed to do so. How many more dogs will suffer and die in this industry before this Government takes action? There is no escaping this simple fact: greyhound racing can’t occur without animal cruelty and must be shut down." - Emma Hurst MP

Greyhounds deserve the opportunity to live safe, happy lives, free from exploitation. It is through our members commitment that we are able to continue advocating for their protection. Together, we will BRING BACK THE BAN!

STOP THE CIRCUS

Give Bella, Zippy and Jet a Real Sanctuary

We've recently launched our new campaign, Stop the Circus: Give Bella, Zippy, and Jet a Real Sanctuary.

The Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary falsely claims to be a sanctuary, but in reality, it’s a place of exploitation. The dolphins - Bella, Zippy, and Jet, were bred for captivity, not rescue.

Confined to small, chlorinated pools, they endure constant stress with no escape from noise and human interactions. Zippy, who performs despite having tumors and the tragic death of a baby dolphin, Ji, who swallowed metal and litter from the tank, show the dire conditions these animals are in. Their health and well-being are at serious risk.

At this so-called sanctuary, dolphins spin hula hoops, seals are made to paint, do handstands and dance and they’re even filmed "twerking" for social media. Dolphins are used for rides and visitors can "swim with dolphins" - clear signs of exploitation, not conservation.

This is not a sanctuary - it’s a circus.

So far the campaign has gained strong support and we’re putting together a plan to make it even stronger. But we need more people like you to make a real impact.

Young AJP

The Young AJP has been buzzing with activity recently, hosting a variety of fun and impactful events. They organised a 'Picnic + Pups' gathering, where attendees enjoyed a nice day outside, vegan food while spending time with their adorable pups!

Their Halloween-themed trivia night at The Chippo was a fun and successful night, with the Young AJP team winning first place and a committee member taking home the prize for Best Dressed!

They also hosted a social meetup at the World Vegan Day Market, connecting with members and newcomers while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and delicious vegan treats. Additionally, they made their voices heard at the Melbourne Cup Rally in Martin Place, standing against horse racing with their message of 'Nup to the Cup.'

These events are strengthening our community and creating a powerful group for political change for animals.

Regional Groups

The Party could not achieve wins for animals without active Regional Group members, who are the heart and soul of the Animal Justice Party. They inspire us every day and highlight the importance of grassroots activism for animals and the environment.

Shark Nets Out Now

Our Central Coast and Newcastle AJP groups have led the charge with multiple Shark Nets Out Now outreach events, receiving overwhelming support from local communities. We collected over 300 letters from concerned residents, calling for the immediate end to shark nets. These letters were proudly hand-delivered to our MP Emma Hurst in NSW Parliament, who passed them to Premier Chris Minns' office.

Though we’ve made significant progress, we are now facing pushback. Despite prior commitments to trial shark net removals, the Government has decided to put shark nets back in the water for another season. This decision shows a complete disregard for animal welfare and the promise of a safer, more humane future for marine life.

It’s outrageous that after a year of planning, the government has failed to act. We can’t allow this to continue. Hundreds of animals will suffer if these nets are allowed to remain.

We Will Not Back Down!

Our promise to the animals killed by these nets this year is simple: We won’t stop fighting until shark nets are out of the water for good.
