Ban Balloon Releases
Right now, it's legal to release balloons in NSW.
Our MP Emma Hurst is fighting in parliament to change that, but she needs your help. Add your voice to our petition to ban balloon releases in NSW.
Balloons released for a moment of celebration or fun can be deadly for animals and destructive to our oceans and environment.
They travel hundreds of kilometres before landing in oceans and waterways, washed up on beaches where many animals look for food. Birds and wildlife are ingesting them and dying, and even feeding them to their young. The balloon compacts inside the gut. It doesn't pass through. It blocks. They starve. It kills.
They don’t deserve this. We need YOUR name on this petition. Sign NOW.
25,777balloons, clips & ribbons collected from Australian beaches (2017–2022) |
|
Up to 19balloons still legally releasable at once in NSW |
Every balloon released is a threat to an animal somewhere.
🐢 Wildlife ingestion & death: Turtles, seabirds and marine animals mistake balloons for food, once swallowed, they block the gut and kill.
🦅 Entanglement & injury: Ribbons and clips wrap around wings and limbs, leaving animals unable to fly, swim, or feed.
🌊 Marine debris: NSW's own Marine Debris Threat and Risk Assessment (2022) lists balloons as a priority threat.
♻️ The government's own policy makes this indefensible: NSW has committed to phasing out single-use items that pollute and can't be recovered. A released balloon is exactly that.

Emma needs your voice to fight for legislation that will ban balloon releases and save thousands of birds and animals.
By signing, you are adding your voice to a growing community demanding that NSW act on its own commitments to protect animals, wildlife and the environment.
This is how we make change together for animals.
