Nets Out in Randwick Council
The Minns Labor government is ignoring science, evidence-based research and the community by putting shark nets back in our beaches.
Shark nets were first placed in our beaches in 1937. They are outdated, ineffective, and cruel. Australia is one of the only countries in the world to still use this outdated technology.
Time is running out for Premier Minns to announce an end to shark nets in the Randwick Council area. We need to act now!
Sign our petition - Together we can show Minns and the Labor Government that the Randwick Council community wants shark nets out of our beaches for good.
Dear Premier Chris Minns,
We, the undersigned, urgently request that you do NOT re-deploy shark nets into Randwick Council beaches this September.
Shark nets are not only ineffective at providing safety for beachgoers, they are indiscriminately killing marine life.
The 2022-23 DPI annual report revealed the devastating impacts to marine biodiversity, finding that 228 animals were entangled in NSW nets from 1 September 2022 to 30 April 2023.
Notably, 89% of these were non-target animals, and 26% of those were endangered or threatened species.
Numerous studies have shown that non-lethal alternatives such as drone surveillance, personal shark deterrents, and increased public education are far more effective and environmentally sustainable.
Please act now to protect the Randwick region's unique marine ecosystem.
Do NOT put shark mesh nets back out into Randwick beaches.
