Murray has actively participated in animal events and committees since 2021, much of this relating to scrutinising government kangaroo reports and data. Murray joined the Animal Justice Party over 3 years ago, and is involved in his local Northern Beaches group.
For over 20 years, Murray has been involved with a group protecting the local little penguin population in Manly, which in recent times he has co-ordinated. This area is home to the only mainland breeding colony in NSW, which has been classified by the government as ‘critically endangered.’
Murray was proud to be nominated for the Manly/Northern Beaches Eco Award in 2016, 2018, 2021 and in 2023 in recognition of his contribution to ‘Caring for our Native Animals’. In the most recent 2023/2024 Landcare NSW Awards, Murray's group of about 35 volunteers received the Coastcare Award.
For over 11 years, Murray has also volunteered at Bear Cottage, the only Children’s Hospice in NSW, providing exercise walks with their therapy dog, currently a big labrador called Beau.
In 2012, Murray organised a group of experts to travel with him to Borneo to help an orangutan. The orangatun, named Rosemary, was confined to a cage due to blindness. By the end of the trip, Murray's group was proud to reach their ultimate goal -- to see Rosemary walk out of her cage and into the forest, where she belongs.
When he isn't volunteering, Murray spends much of his time with his rescue cat Barry.
